Pass on this place. We will never order from this place again because of the jack holes that work there. New Year's Eve we were hungry and wanted to order from this place, which we did maybe 15-20x/year. It's decent stuff. And while the service is promoted as "lousy" on that night it was deplorable. On two calls the person answering the phone played "repeat what the customer says" until I hung up. On the subsequent call he was downright rude. I get it. You have a shitty job because you aren't educated or you aren't ambitious. So be it. Your boss is more forgiving than I would be, unless he or she is in the habit of burning four hundred dollars a year because their employee is an asshat. That is his or her business entirely. Shitty business model though. Too bad for you dumbshits too. Unlike the majority of patrons who pick up, I tip--well. Way to take money out of your own pocket. Idiots. Pass this shithole by on your way to Gusto. Better pizza at a lower price.

When you work a full 9 hours, then fly from CLE to MKE to DSM and get in around 11pm, nothing beats a slice or two of Big Tomato before crashing at your sister's before a few days of I'm-only-in-town-for-3-days-must-do-everything-see-everyone. If you're gonna order a whole pie, make it worth it by getting something you can't get from the Hut. Bonus: once saw a guy get tackled by a burly cop after hitting his girlfriend.

If you want food late, I mean real late. Don't mind the occasional wafting odor of teen spirit, which could be from behind the yacht club next door, or maybe from the kitchen, or the occasional fight in the counter area, the counter guy may just break it up. The pizza is good, they have some killer alfredo sauce, I recommend it with any of their veggie style pizzas. Get it by the slice late, too expensive to order it by the pie. Don't expect to pampered. If your a tool and have special food concerns don't come here, because they don't care about you, your middle management job, or your dodge stratus.

The late night pizza slices are fantastic. My favorite is the honey garlic alfredo, but I haven't tried a kind I dislike.

If you're drunk and can't drive, or a college student at Drake, hungry at 1 AM, or both, order here and they will deliver to you. Eventually. Otherwise, order for pickup and you're going to find that you get your pizza very fast. People like to complain about the lousy service but I feel like holding Big tomato to the same service standards as a chain pizza restaurant is silly. This isn't Dominos and I'm sorry but there aren't 4 teenagers working the phones, taking orders online, producing bland, boring, cheap crap. They're not selling personality here. They make pizza. There are people that have been ordering from here for 20+ years. There is a good reason for that. This business is here, and thriving, for very good reason. The pizza is a Des Moines institution, so you'll have to excuse the long line of callers ahead of you ordering, or standing in line waiting for a slice to soak up all the alcohol.

They are known for lousy service (it's basically a joke now). Delivery is usually a little slow. But you must get their pizza. Get the honey garlic alfredo. It will not disappoint. For the people with complaints, I think it's best to accept Big Tomato for what it is. And it certainly ain't fancy but the pizza is good drunk or sober :)

If I could give negative stars I would. I ordered delivery late at night and they told me an hour. After an hour and twenty minutes and seeing that my card had been charged for the pizza I called to check on my order and was yelled at by an employee who's attitude was uncalled for. He had a serious power trip and yelled at me using foul language and claimed that he told the delivery driver to cancel my order after acknowledging it was on the way. I was hung up on and told he was the only one there I could not speak to management and he had zero respect or customer service skills. I could care less about how the pizza tastes, worst money I ever spent in my life.

If you take the motto "lousy service" in the window to heart, this pizza dive delivers on all points. It's a small locally owned pizza shop with a carry out window and a really small lobby. They have slices in fun combinations of their diverse toppings for late-night after bar food. My favorite thing on the menu is their crop top pizza, which is four veggies on their honey wheat crust. The size of the veggies is AWESOME and their sauce is my absolute favorite in town. There's also some good people watching to do on weekends at bar close. They also deliver pretty much anywhere!

Yikes, I am really scratching my head at some of the raving reviews. The lousy service sign is actually true. Joke or not, I'd rather not have my pizza served by a cashier that used the same hands to hold bills and put the cheese on the crust. The price of a slice of pizza isn't even cheap. But you do have to stand there eating it off the lousy paper plate dripping with oils. The pizza itself is way too oily and doesn't have enough of the topping to justify the price. Overall, I wouldn't come here again. And having chairs, even in a fast food joint, isn't supposed to be a luxury.

Best place in Des Moines for late night slices. Cheaper, quicker, and not as busy as Fong's. More options for vegetarians. Not much seating but great to go and tasty flavors!

  • Heather J.

Let me give you a tip...you don't come here to sit down (sometimes they have 2 or 3 chairs), if your looking for touchy feely conversation look elsewhere, sandwiches are not on the menu...they have PIZZA! And it is delish. Want some apples on that? How about asparagus, hot dogs, sausage, Hawaiian with Alfredo sauce? Gluten free, different crusts, upwards of 50+ toppings and different sauces all available. Get your pie here! Their flier says slices most any time...nope. Slices start around 11pm each night. They write what they have on a plain ole fashion piece of lined paper and cross out the ones they run out of as they go. You want delivery? Sure in about 1 1/2 hours... Spoiler alert: order and pick it up yourself. They will tell you ready in 30-45 but usually have ready in 15-20. Best of Des Moines!

The best pizza in the world. Not even kidding. The lousy service sign is half a joke- the place is staffed by the tattooed and/or high- which it adds to it's charm. They do not wear prices of flair. They do t have to. The pizza is fucking awesome. They have pizza by the slice from 11p-3a I recommend the #4, but any if them are amazing. I've been coming here since 1997 and never have I had anything negative. Go there. Always faster to just call and pick up then to have delivered. Usually ready in 15-20 min. There's always a debate, but I'd vote Big Tomato over Fong's any day of the week. Unless you want to sit down- they don't really do that. It's more of pick up counter, but they do have 3 barstools of you're feeling classy and want to dine in.

This place is a joke. The sign out front in green neon says lousy service. That is 100% correct. I have ordered delivery from this place and they have either refused to deliver to my residence or said they tried to deliver it and I refused to answer the door when the driver supposedly showed up. When you walk into the business the music is loud and the walls separating the common area to the kitchen is made of plywood. The pizza you get by the slice is usual like warm and you have no clue how long it has been in that box on top of their ovens. Most of the employees are completely rude and really don't care about their appearance or how they treat you as a customer. The only thing they have going for themselves is being open 365 days a year and the fact they are open till 3 a.m.

Better than most pizzas, more expensive than most too. The boyfriend and I stopped by after work to get pizza to go for MNF. We weren't really greeted by anyone. There was someone making a pizza and then someone hidden around the order window. Not very friendly when he asked what we wanted to order. This hipster bullshit of "I'm too awesome to be friendly and outgoing with people even though that's my job" seems to be the motto here. It was out first time there so we wanted to try a little of everything. We got the Cajun Shrimp, Potato & Onion Ring, and a pepperoni and jalapeno. They were all good. Probably the best pizza I've had since moving here. What I don't get is charging $16.00 for a tiny pizza. The 3 pizzas cost us $51.00. It's outrageous for what we got. The cajun shrimp was good but not really cajun-y. The shrimp were a joke. It's the tiny, smaller than a dime, barely can tell they're there shrimp and you don't taste them at all. The potato and onion ring, again, was good but I was expecting onion rings. You know? Deep fried and crispy? What you get is sliced potatoes and sliced raw onion. I get paying more for seafood or meat on a pizza but why am I expected to pay $16.00 for a pizza with some of the cheapest toppings? Is the sauce made of gold? Gah. The pepperoni & jalapeno pizza was our favorite. The sauce was good, but again why should I pay $16.00 for a pizza that is half the size and not much better than a pizza I can get for $5? Maybe I can afford to go back one day, maybe after I get my taxes back.

If I could give a zero rating I would. Sadly I will never know what the pizza tastes like. Waited 45 minutes for them to tell me that I was outside delivery area. Fine-not happy but ok. Tried to call the restaurant to make sure that my credit card charge was credited. Was hung up on 4 times. Rude. And lied. Thanks for the half price pizza offer but I have no intention of ever stepping foot in there . Will never make any recommendations and have asked family and friends to make sure they have a back up plan if they want to actually eat. This happened this past Saturday evening at 630. I cannot even imagine how rude the non-service would become later in the evening. I can't even call it poor service because there was no service at all. Very sad for the restaurant and I'm deeply disappointed.

Wouldnt even order from this place! The person answering the phone on the night of 6/7/14 was a total douchebag! Will Never order from this place as a result of this experience!

I ordered a pizza. 2.5 hours late. cold. called to resolve, got hung up on. I've filled a complaint with BBB and will be requesting a refund with my CC. Stay away from this awful business. if they're this half a** about their service, how do you think they feel about quality control.

I love these guys and the pizza! The combinations they come up with are interesting to say the least, but......very delicious!

Gross pizza filthy resturant and rude service. The sign out front is probably to cover up the fact that they purposly hire low wage inexperienced lazy no future plans people. Id hate my job too. Plus the fact that there was a fly in my pizza AND a hair. YES a Hair. Never again will I stoop to paying for the crap pizza they call BIG TOMATO!! Big waste!!

  • Mark G.

For me, the pizza was perfect for my taste. Thin crust, crispy, great cheese blend, tasty sauce, taste great hot, taste great cold, has a lil extra seasoning to make it stand out. Just expect great pizza, they have a "lousy service" sign which may or may not be true, haven't experienced it. 5 Stars all the way for the pizza.

I started going to Big Tomato Pizza when I went to Drake University. It was always best to go there after midnight when they sold pizza by the slice. Pizza by the slice was reasonably priced but to order a whole pizza is expensive. The flavors are unique and always changing. The crust is not my favorite but the flavors are great. One down side is there really isn't anywhere to sit.

    (4)
  • Buffalo B.

The best pizza by the slice you can buy from 11pm to 4am in Des Moines. The service isn't as lousy as they advertise unless your a drunk jerk. Th Elaine out the door when the bars close is always entertaining if your not in a hurry. The exotic pizzas with veggies are my favorite.

    (5)
  • Kris L.

Good pizza. OK prices and service. I went on a weekday a little after noon seeking slices. They don't really do slices. I ordered a 12" mushroom and roma tomato pizza with whole wheat. Had to wait 15-20 minutes for that to bake, which ate up most of my lunch break. The pizza was good, however, especially the cheese and mushrooms.

  • Brooke P.

I really love the pizza here. We order it all the time and if we can manage to stay out late enough we try to swing by for a slice. Peas and Corn is the best combo! They also dump what seems like an entire bag of doritos on the taco pizza.

hung up upon twice, never again.

  • Adam P.

What my fellow yelpers in the DM has failed to mention the pizza is $2.50 a slice. You are not paying for service or the best slice of pie you will ever have. So what are you paying for??? DINNER AND A SHOW!!! The late night bar crowd coming to get food is worth the price of admission. Sometime I will grab a spot on the sidewalk and just watch the show! It is funny to think about the guy who bought a whole pizza for $25 the next morning saying to him self "Did I really buy a pizza for $25, and did I even get a piece??" (of pizza, you dirty thinkers) Slices start to be served at 11pm Also my favorite slice is the BBQ Beef fantabulous!

    (3)
  • Marianne S.

Our favorite..4 cheese peporoni and pinapple, also honey garlic w alfredo and potato, beef ,pineapple with alfredo. If you want to test your tastebuds ask for a special combo...next pizza we are trying will have green apple on it, was told it is fantasical... those guys REALLLY know their pizza. AND it is one of the best places in Des Moines to get a COOKED pizza, nice with some browning on the cheese not barely melted. THats what gives it the flavor.

    (5)
  • Samantha H.

Here is what you need to know. The pizza top is super crispy meaning the edges get burnt most of the time. This is good. it means the rest of the pizza will be cooked. It is not fast and the workers will probably give you attitude. Deal with it. This is what Big tomato is. Great pizza made by people drinking beer who dress homeless and probably really like their job unlike most of the population. The combo are awesome and if you order by the slice they cannot modify it since they are already cooked. This is a unique place so please go with the flow and dont try to change it because you will be kicked out and laughed at. best time to go? midnight. its before the drunk crown and the line isnt as long. Give it a try. The pizza speaks for itself.

I was in DsM visiting some friends over the weekend and we stopped by at about 3am on our way home from the Royal Mile. The "lousy service" sign made me laugh when I first saw it, but they weren't kidding. We waited for well over 20 minutes to get a few slices and the guy at the counter wouldn't accept my friends' request for a cheese slice and a peperoni slice until he ordered by the numbers printed on the menu. Kind of a dick move if you ask me. Buuuuuut, the pizza was actually really really good, so I'd probably put up with the assholery there just for that.

    (3)
  • Mike G.

Open late. Pizza by the slice. Fucked up topping combinations. Bad attitudes. They even have a sign in the window that says lousy service. I saw a girl complain about a hair in her slice and sure enough she was lifting the cheese up by the hair. But did Holmes behind the counter care? Not even one shits, let alone two. This place is a gem.

    (4)
  • Justin W.

Expensive and not very good unless you're wasted. Not really all that unique either. Hell, not even the most unabashedly lousy service of a late night pizza place in Des Moines! (That award goes to Paul Revere's) Big T gets punk cred though, so I guess that's something.

    (2)
  • Megan H.

There are certain things Big Tomato does well. Delivery? Not unless you want to wait for hours. Standard pizza before 11pm? You can get much better elsewhere. 10 different kinds of pizza sporting funky topping combinations for $2.50 a slice after the bars close? Yes, yes, and yes. Honey and garlic... broccoli and cheddar... peas and carrots... just about anything you can imagine could show up on the list. And as other reviewers have mentioned, part of the fun is watching everyone else in line as their post-bar dramas play out before your eyes. Don't expect your Big Tomato trip to be a quick stop on the way home... the list is posted on the counter where only the very first people in line can see it, so you won't know your options until it's your turn to order. Drunk people making pizza decisions? This is at least a 30-minute stop. But so very worth it. I once ordered an extremely spicy Cajun slice and had nothing to wash it down. They were out of bottled water and I'm not a soda drinker, so one of the guys behind the counter gave me a PBR from the employee stash. Only at Big Tomato!

For starters the the phone was not answered for about a minute, and once it was I was put on hold. Okay place must be busy right? Well when I finally got to order for a delivery to my hotel the guy was fairly rude. He acted as if it was an inconvenience that I was calling. I nearly hung up but wanted to give it a try. I guess when they say lousy service they mean it. Once my order was place I was told it would be about 1 hour for delivery. Well an hour and half later my pizza shows up. Crust is burnt on the edges and toppings were pretty slim. The pizza itself was satisfying. If at 3 am you want a modest pizza at an okay price with poor service this is your place.

  • jason w.

Best pizza delivery in des moines. Prices are a little high but worth having good pizza delivered to me at 2am. I don't like the amount of cheese they put on it, but if you say to put on light cheese it works out well.

  • Virginia M.

I loved Big T. First I tried another pizza they had on the menu which I didn't really care for. But when I asked if they could put bell peppers with their philly steak and jalapenos I was so surprised at how well it came out. It was one of the best pizzas ever. I still have to try their other selections but I'll be going back for that my philly steak/bell pepper/jalapeno pizza. The guy at the counter was pretty cool too, and yes I like the atmosphere because you never know what "show" you're gonna get with the bar crowd next door.

Maybe I have become a snob after so many years living on the East Coast and then on the West Coast. I like to think I have held onto my Iowa roots and I like Iowa, I do. But, by and large, the pizza in Iowa disappoints me. Usually ranging from "not quite right" to "downright terrible," I often find myself saying "never again." However, after a night of drinking with some people I had not seen for years, I was talked into trying Big Tomato at 2 AM. I am glad I did. They had a variety of toppings combinations, they were open late, they gave extra slices, and to top it all off: the pizza was actually really good. The crust was thin and crisp enough. The toppings plentiful and the sauce was very tasty. In Des Moines. WTF? When you go, there will be a line. But just remind yourself the pizza is good and laugh at the neon sign that proclaims "Lousy Service."

The best late night food anywhere. Had a couple slices over the Thanksgiving holiday and plan to have some when I'm in Des Moines for Christmas. I visit Big Tomato every time I come back to DM.

  • Danelle W.

If you're a fan of thin crust pizza definitely check this place out! They're open late too which is a plus. Their pizza is more expensive than most places but it is definitely worth it for the amazing taste and unique toppings.
